There’s been a lot of talk, very overdue talk, about who Canada’s essential workers are in the COVID-19 pandemic.

But it turns out some of these essential workers aren’t even in the country yet.

They’re stuck in their homelands, among the tens of thousands of people whose hopes of settling in Canada have run smack into the coronavirus roadblock. As a new Royal Bank of Canada report shows, this isn’t just bad for them. It’s bad for all of us here in Canada, too.
