With its high-quality educational institutions, Canada has proven to be a world-beater when it comes to attracting international students. It also offers a fantastic opportunity to study in an English/French environment and is known to be a safe country.

However, with the COVID-19 pandemic currently causing travel restrictions, it has affected immigration and overseas educational programs. So, to ensure that the International student syllabus is not interrupted, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have recently announced new reforms.

Starting in fall 2020, international students will begin their course online through a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI). For the first time, they will be able to complete up to fifty percent of the program abroad and then still be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) once they graduate.

The PGWP allows international students to work for up to three years in Canada after graduating, provided they complete an eight-month full-time program at a DLI. The new reforms will make it easier for students to comply, while saving them money on living expenses by completing half of the course online in their native country.

Besides, the work experience gained during the PGWP also plays a big part when international students decide to apply to immigrate to Canada permanently. The Express Entry’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), and Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), are just two popular immigration pathways that get enhanced by completing work experience in Canada.

Consequently, the latest announcement by IRCC regarding online study for International students will ensure that Canada remains a popular destination for higher education. It’s also an excellent opportunity for international students to take advantage of the weaker Canadian dollar.
